How Team BC is Selected
In the years leading to the Games, BC's finest young
athletes are chosen by their Provincial Sport
Organization using selection criteria and competition
playdowns. As the best in their respective age groups in
the Training to Compete phase of Canadian Sport for Life
Model, (also known as the Long-Term Athlete Development
Model), these competitors come to the Games having
trained long and hard to be among those chosen to
represent their respective province or territory and
compete for medals, and the Canada Games Flag. Team BC
is also about providing sport science and medicine
support to round out an athlete's preparation to
compete, challenging coaches to create optimal training
environments, and building leadership excellence by
selecting and training mission staff with skills and
knowledge to support Team BC athletes and coaches. And
above all, Team BC is about getting to know other
Canadians from a lifetime of memories for participants
in Canada's greatest celebration of sport and culture.
The Team BC program is more than British Columbia's best; it's also
about building excellence. For some athletes, the Canada
Games are a goal along the way to what they hope will be
success in sport at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. For
others, the Canada Games are the goal, their personal
dream. Jaimie Borisoff competed for Team BC in
wheelchair basketball at the 1995 Canada Winter Games
and went on to win a Paralympic gold medal for Canada at
the 2004 Games in Athens; swimmer Brent Hayden swam for
British Columbia at the 2001 Canada Summer Games and competed at the
2004 Olympic Games; Speed skater Alanna Kraus has
competed in both the 2002 and 2006 Olympic Winter Games
and she competed for Team BC in 1991; and two-time
National Basketball Association MVP Steve Nash graced
the courts for Team BC at the 1993 Canada Summer Games
in Kamloops.
