Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out more about a sport for my child/myself?

The fastest way to find a contact for a particular sport is to visit the Sport BC website and look for the provincial sport organization links. Most teams, clubs, leagues and events are linked with provincial sport organizations.

Many community-level sports are run through schools and/or community recreation centres. Contact both for more information.

The SportFit interactive website can also help identify winter sports that “ fit” well with your child’s abilities and interests and provides information on how to get started in sport.

What resources are available to help me or my family be more physically active?

  • Canada’s Physical Activity Guides to Healthy Active Living (available on the Public Health Agency of Canada website or through your local health authority) is an excellent resource to help you and your family integrate physical activity into your day. These resources include guides for adults, seniors, children, youth, teachers and families.
  • Action Schools BC! is an elementary school-based model that helps teachers integrate physical activity into the school day. Check out the website at Action Schools BC to see how your school can be more active, more often.
  • KidSport™ is a program that provides grants for registration fees so that kids from low income families can play. For more information about the program in your area, visit the Sport BC website and look for the KidSport™ link.
  • Many recreation centres also have free or reduced fee programs for families with low income. The Leisure is for Everyone (L.I.F.E) program is offered in some British Columbia recreation centres – check with your local recreation centre or municipal recreation office to see if there’s a program near you.
  • Most recreation centres also offer reduced registration fees for seniors and students.

How do I find out about local sporting events? Is there a British Columbia calendar of sport events?

As British Columbia communities are home to thousands of sporting events each year, it would be almost impossible to find an up-to-date single source of information on all sports in British Columbia, so here’s where you can start…

  • Sport and Recreation Branch – this website (see Major International Event Hosting in BC and Physical Activity Calendar) lists some of the major events and annual physical activity “observances” (e.g. International Move for Health Day).
  • SportWeb – the SportWeb program, a joint venture by 2010 Legacies Now and the PacificSport Group, has a calendar of major international and national events being held in British Columbia. See PacificSport or 2010 Legacies Now for this listing.
  • Local Recreation Centres and Retail Sport Stores – many events distribute brochures and posters to recreation centres and retail sport stores. Check out their brochure racks or displays.
  • Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) – as many sport events receive sanctioning (official approval) from their respective PSOs, PSOs will routinely list these events on their websites. For links to your PSO, visit Sport BC. National and international sport events are often listed or linked to the PSO and/or National Sport Organization websites.
  • Local Newspapers – local print media often carry ads and calendars of sport events in the sport section or “Around Town” sections.
  • Tourism/Municipalities – as many event organizers require special permission from their local government and/or promote their event through their local tourism office, check your city or tourism association websites for calendars of events.
  • Multisport Organizations – organizations such as the PacificSport Group; Sport BC and the BC Recreation and Parks Association often promote special and/or major events. The Sport and Recreation Branch website also lists major international events and observances (e.g. International Move for Health Day).
