Promoting the Health of Girls and Women in B.C.

The Government of British Columbia is committed to improving the health of B.C. girls and women.

Although the health of girls and women in B.C. is among the best in the world, inequities do exist, particularly when comparing length of life to quality of life, and the needs and means to achieve optimal health.

(Health equity means the absence of unfair differences in health and the existence of equal access to health services among all individuals, regardless of social, economic, demographic or geographic circumstances.)

Framework for Women-Centered Care

The Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport promotes women-centered care, which supports reducing inequities and addressing differing health needs. This approach acknowledges that women and men practice good health and access health care services differently. A holistic perspective is required, one that considers the physical, psychological, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual elements of a person. See illustration (page 13).
